To determine such miscellania as attachments and multiple awards, two manuals are especially useful: The Manual of Military Decorations and Awards from the Defense Department and SecNav Instruction 1650.1G from the Secretary of the Navy, current as of 1 January 2006. The ribbon in the lower right position has the lowest precedence. To identify awards on a uniform, start with the ribbon in the upper left (highest precedence) and work across, then down each row. Precedence determines the order in which ribbons are to be arranged on uniforms. Most ratings had a unique symbol that appeared on uniform sleeves, although during World War II some ratings shared a common symbol. These medals and ribbons were issued to navy personnel from 1940 to 2005, and are listed in order of precedence.
